NYC and dear evan hansen !!!
A little over a month ago, I went to NYC with my family to celebrate my sweet 16 and my brother’s tenth birthday. I’ve always loved the city and New York somehow feels like home even though I’ve been there only twice.
Unfortunately, we got there Saturday midday and left Sunday evening so there wasn’t all that much time to do the traditional touristy things that many do. When we reached, we went to the hotel and set out to explore Times Square and the surrounding areas. We walked around and shopped and ate and met up with my aunt and uncle who live in the city.
The best part of the trip was hands down getting to see Dear Evan Hansen. I had been listening to the soundtrack ever since it came out and I loved it, so finally getting to see it live was the best experience ever. Ben Platt and the rest of the cast were so phenomenal and the message behind the musical was so beautiful that I started crying right at the beginning of the show and I could not stop.
If you don’t know what Dear Evan Hansen is about, it is about a senior in high school with social anxiety who gets caught inside the chaos of the aftermath of a classmate’s suicide. Dear Evan Hansen hits home for a lot of people as it depicts the power of social media and how many people our age may be struggling to find our way through this world.
Seeing this show in person really took the message to a whole new level. As teenagers, it is hard for us to understand that we are not alone. Sometimes it may feel as if the world is out to get us and only us, or that nobody supports us and loves us, but this is untrue. There is always light at the end of the tunnel and that’s important to know.
Yesterday was Ben Platt’s last time performing as Evan in Dear Evan Hansen after three and a half years of pure genius. I am thankful to have gotten to see him before he left, as he really made the character and the show come alive. I know it seems as though I am being super overdramatic but honestly this musical changed the way I think about life and the way I treat others. In this time of our lives, it is so easy to put a mask over our true feelings and identity but I really think it’s important to let all that go and be yourself, although it can be tough.
“Don’t waste any time trying to be anyone but yourself, because the things that make you strange are the things that make you powerful.” – Ben Platt
Remember…spread LOVE !!!
